Your space, your style: Personalizing your Windows Live space

After you get a Windows Live space from the Windows Live Spaces website, one of the fun things you can do is personalize it. Here are some things you can do to make your space reflect your personality.

Title and tagline

You can use your title and tagline to identify yourself, express how you're feeling that day, or state your favorite saying or catchphrase.

To change your title and tagline, click Edit in the title and tagline module.

Enter your new title and tagline in the boxes provided, and then make whatever changes you want to the font style, size, color, and alignment.

Modules

You can add a variety of items to your space, including a blog, photo albums, or lists of things, like your favorite movies. To add modules, click Customize, and then click Add modules.

On the Modules screen, you'll find a list of items you can show on your space. Click Show next to any of the items you want to show on your space. You can always hide modules later, so don't worry about trying something out.

When you're done, click Close, and then click Save in the yellow customize bar.

You can also move modules around on your space. To do so, click Customize, and then click Rearrange or hide modules.

The yellow customize bar will appear. If you point to a module title, you'll see the Move pointer Picture of the Move pointer, which means you can move the module. To move the module, drag the module to where you want it on your space.

When you're done moving modules, click Save in the customize bar.

Layout, themes, and templates

You can use layouts, themes, and templates to dramatically change the look of your space in just a few clicks.

Layouts are the number and size of the columns on your space.

Themes are pre-set colors, fonts, and background images you can add to your space.

Templates are a combination of layouts and themes, plus modules and gadgets.

You can try out these options by clicking Customize. You'll see options for applying a template, changing the theme, or changing the layout.

With layouts, themes, or templates, you can preview the changes before you apply them to your space. If you decide you don't want to make any changes, click Cancel in the yellow customize bar.

Use layouts, themes, and templates as a starting point to personalize your space to fit your style, and then modify the fonts and colors on your space to make it look exactly the way you want.

Colors and fonts

While you can use templates and themes to set the colors and fonts on your space, you can also choose other colors and fonts to use.

Click Customize, and then click Advanced.

On the Advanced screen you can choose colors, fonts, and background images

Here you can enter the colors and fonts for your space. If you know the RGB value for the color you want to use, you can enter it, or you can click the color picker icon Picture of the Color picker icon to select the color you want. To find the RGB value for the color you want to use, go to the table of color names and their corresponding RGB values on the MSDN website.

Like layouts, themes, and templates, you can preview your changes in the background before you click Save. And of course you can always go back to the way your space looked before—just click Cancel in the yellow customize bar.

Background image

To really make your space unique, you can use your own photo or other picture or graphic as the background image on your space.

Click Customize, click Advanced, and then click Background image.

You can set a background image for your space on the Advanced screen

Select Use a custom image for the page, and then click Browse to find an image on your computer to use as the background of your space.

You can create a tiled effect by clicking Repeat on the menu (this option works well if your image is small in size). You can set where your image appears on the page using the horizontal and vertical alignment options. And changing the transparency of your modules to show more of your background image can really make your space "pop."

Some things to note about background images:

Large images are automatically resized to a resolution of 800 x 600 and converted to a smaller file size so the image won't affect the loading time of your space.

Setting the module transparency to anything other than 0 (zero) may cause your space to load more slowly.

Have fun customizing your space!
