How do I use protected files after transferring them to a new computer or upgrading Windows?
Once you have upgraded your computer to the latest version of Windows and have transferred your music and video files, you'll need to retrieve new media usage rights for any protected files transferred.
If you’ve ever purchased a song from an online music store or ripped a CD with the copy protection setting turned on, you probably have protected music files on your computer. When you copy a protected file from one computer to another, you typically must download new media usage rights before you can use it on the new computer.
In many cases, Windows Media Player 11 handles media usage rights acquisition for you. When you attempt to play a song that requires new media usage rights, the Player will typically try to download them automatically. If it can’t do so, an error message usually appears that instructs you what to try next (for example, verify that you are connected to the Internet, signed in to your online store, and so on.)
If you are unable to download new media usage rights, see Windows Media Player DRM: frequently asked questions or contact your online music store for assistance.
